Relational trauma therapy in Croydon

How I work with relational trauma

Relational trauma is harm that happened in relationship, usually early and usually more than once. It is not always a single identifiable event. More often it is a pattern. Not being responded to. Being responded to unpredictably. Being made responsible for an adult's feelings. Being close to someone whose care came with conditions attached.

People often arrive without naming it as trauma at all. They come because relationships keep going a particular way, or because they cannot rest, or because they feel a long way from other people without quite knowing why.

The work is relational, which means what happens between us is part of it rather than separate from it. Patterns formed in early relationships tend to show up in later ones, including this one, and noticing that as it happens is often more useful than describing it from a distance.

Pace matters more here than anywhere else. There is no requirement to tell me everything, and no version of this where I push you into territory before you are ready. Part of my job is to watch for when the pace is being exceeded, including when you have not noticed it yourself.

    How long this work takes

The therapy is open ended, meaning there is no limit on the number of sessions. I go through a therapeutic review with you every six to eight weeks.

    If you need support urgently

Therapy is not an emergency service, and I am not available for crisis support between sessions.

    If you need help urgently:

    • Contact your GP, or call 111 and select the mental health option
    • Samaritans are free, 24 hours a day, on 116 123
    • In an emergency, call 999 or go to your nearest A&E
